Flowers are pretty, but what if you could grow and share fruit and vegetables from your neighborhood? Fruits and vegetables are pretty and tasty, especially, when the it comes from your neighborhood!
not far from the tree has put together a neighbourhood fruit gathering project that combines local, community building, and waste reduction.
You can't go wrong with a 1/3 split of the fruit haul from backyard trees between the volunteer pickers, the tree owners and local food banks and shelters.
2008 is our first full season of fruit harvesting, beginning in the
neighbourhood of Ward 21/St. Clair West. We are currently partnering
with two fantastic organizations (the Stop Community Food Centre and LEAF)
to fortify our efforts. After the fruit tree owners and volunteers
split 2/3 of the harvest, we donate the remaining 1/3 to food programs
in the neighbourhood. In Ward 21, fresh fruit is delivered to NaMeRes and Wychwood Open Door.
As we expand, we hope to become a network of neighbourhood-based fruit
tree initiatives around the city, with our combined efforts
encompassing education, training, mapping, preserving, and celebration.
Do you have apples? Cherries? Peaches? Plums? Mulberries? Serviceberries? Apricots? Pears? Quince? Elderberries? Get involved to share your fruit!
We harvest as much of the fruit as we can (within safety limits);
We leave the ground beneath clean;
You can keep up to 1/3 of the fruit that we pick, if you wish;
You help minimize food waste in our community and supply fresh fruit to those in need.
If you have a fruit tree that you would like us to harvest, simply fill out this registration form:
Mike reported to us, earlier, that Ford will not be selling its 5-seat, 65mpg Fiesta diesel sedan model in the USA. See Ford Introduces 63.6 MPG ECOnetic Diesel Fiesta... Only in Europe ... for technical details on the vehicle.
Business Week offers interesting explanations for why Ford Motor Co. is instead making a gasoline version for the US market, cutting the vehicle's efficiency back significantly. As the 65 mpg diesel version currently is made and offered in Europe only, the devalued US dollar figures into the decision not to im...

Before you start getting worried, let me reassure you that this is not a case of a genetic engineering experiment gone terribly wrong. No, apparently it's just your typical case of polar bears swimming in a particularly algae-rich pond, as the AP reports:
Three normally white polar bears at Higashiyama Zoo and Botanical Gardens in central Japan changed their color in July after swimming in a pond with an overgrowth of algae.

The party leaders by LeDaro
They do it fast up here; 36 days from the announcement until the election. But then unlike the States, all the leaders are in place and well known, all of the policies and platforms ready to go, as the Conservative Prime Minister Stephen Harper tries to get a majority government. Stephane Dion's Liberals used to be known as the Natural Governing Party, having been in power for most of the 20th century, but the center/ left is now split among four parties- the Liberals, the New Democrats with Jack Layton as leader, the Greens with Elizabeth May, and the Quebec Separatist Bloc Quebecois.

You probably have faced the dilemma of how to find out which products are Good and which products are Bad, never mind sorting out when Bad companies make Good products, or vice versa. A lot of consumers turn to the internet, to bloggers and reviews. But who can you trust? Who is the judge when a reputable company is accused of unsuitable practices? And what can you expect from a vendor of premium quality products?
Almost Vegetarian sent TreeHugger a tip linking their article about New Moon Kitchen cookies, asking us to spread the word to our readers. The accusations are sensational. But....are they true?...
Utility Computing has been with us for a while, in fact since 1961. The idea is to sell 'cycles as a service'; just strap a meter onto a server and then the user pays for whatever computer time they use. It is much like any other utility such as gas, electric, cable, etc.
But is it green? Cassatt, a leading provider of management software for these types of installations, thinks we are headed in this direction... had a c...
The global food system is complex. Wayne Roberts' new book, The No-Nonsense Guide to World Food, is an accessible overview of how the system works - and how it can be fixed.
"The problems we experience can often be linked to an invisible food system that is 'hidden in plain sight'. When we become aware of this food system, new ways of understanding food controversies and smarter ways of solving food problems start to become clear."
This pocket sized book is the latest in the series from The New Internationalist's No-Nonsense series. I...
Gidon Bromberg is the Israeli Director of Friends of the Earth - Middle East, a trilateral NGO working to promote peace and sustainability in the Middle East.
In part one of this interview, Gidon discussed FoEME's work in promoting cross-border cooperation on water issues and how it relates to the Middle East water crisis and the controversial topic of desalination.
In part two, he talks about food security in the Middle East, the role of agriculture in semi-arid countries and, of course, the Red Sea-Dead Sea Canal and the new proposals to turn the Israe...

Driven by the increasingly pressing need to provide a stable food supply for its surging population (1.3 billion and growing), China has decided to engineer its own "Green Revolution" by embarking on a massive $3.5 billion GM crops R&D initiative, reports Science's Richard Stone. With this new biotechnology infrastructure in place, the Chinese hope to discover and patent their own genes "of great value" -- engaging in direct competition with the likes of Monsanto and ...
A recent guest post from Rocky Mountain Institute points out how vulnerable the USA remains to hurricanes in the Gulf of Mexico, citing hurricane Gustave as an example. This current post's graphic dramatically displays the risk. The more intense a future hurricane is, the greater the chance of in inland incursion (per the image) doing long term physical damage to refinery equipment and pipelines.

Looking at the whole of the "Clean Coal" and "Energy Security" equation on a single political map - suppliers and customers shown in one context - helps explain why both US presidential candidates have openly supported "clean coal" or "synfuel," and why members of both major political parties barely mention climate change in convention speeches. The political risk is enormous. Via::USEIA, Figure 7. Coal Shipments from Coal Producing Regions to Coal Synfuel Plants, 2007...
