Canadians can enjoy delicious, organic, fair trade spices from Sri Lanka, thanks to the efforts of the Small Organic Farmers Association  and Sahana, a small Canadian company. Sahana imports Arayuma teas and spices directly from Biofoods / SOFA (Small Organic Farmers Association)

SOFA is an organic farmer group organized on fair trade principles, located in central Sri Lanka. SOFA was founded in 1997, with 183 farmers, and leadership by Dr Sarath Ranaweera. SOFA members continue the fair trade struggle for better standards of living, education and health.

Delicious Arayuma teas and spices are available in Montreal, Toronto, and Ottawa. Learn more about these delicious teas and spices...

Taking the fair trade and organic production conditions as a fundamental benchmark, Sahana and its Arayuma lines focus on providing rich and authentic spices and teas. The spices for example include real cinnamon (cinnamon verum) rather than cassia bark, which we are accustomed to in North America. This subtler and more pungent cinnamon is a nose opener for those of us accustomed to thick chunks of cassia bark. Try a cinnamon quill and you won't look back.

The tea bags used to hold the "leaf" grade tea leaves are made from a corn mesh that is biodegradable and free of chlorine or other chemical bleaches. Their pyramid shape allows for a richer brewing, akin to loose leaf teas. And if you want to try loose leaf tea, Arayuma sells chai tins that hold 100g of loose chai. [N.B. in many languages the word for tea is chai or cha so when we say "chai tea" we are saying "tea tea"].

Working on a tea plantation is hard work and collecting spices can be brutal but at least in the case of Arayuma's goods, you can enjoy them knowing that there is a lot more love and a much bigger share of your money flowing back to the farmers, their families and their communities.

Teas: Chai; Black teas (Earl Grey, ginger orange pekoe, vanilla orange pekoe); Green teas (ginger green, lemon green, mellow green, mint green,); Ayurvedic teas (avaram, bilva, lemongrass, mint, sariva).

Spices: Cardamom Pods Whole, Chili Pepper, Cinnamon Ground, Cinnamon Quills, Cloves Whole, Curry Blend Ground, Curry Blend Herbal Ground, Curry Cubes - Herbal blend, Curry Cubes - Mild blend, Curry Leaf Whole, Ginger, Lemongrass Sticks, Mace Whole, Nutmeg, Black and White Pepper, Turmeric.

[Does this sound like a shill for Arayuma's products? It is. Enjoy, because I certainly have been!]  uuummmmmmmmmmmmmm

Equita also imports some of these spices and teas. See their website.
