Karma Tycoon is all about helping and earning karma rather than money or points for killing. It is brought to you by the folks that encourage us to DO SOMETHING. The mellow music and addictive gameplay lure you into a difficult world of helping the homeless and most vulnerable...another excellent example of a fun, green and fair game.

Players get a feeling for work in the non-profit sector and actually making a difference in 11 different cities across the United States, running a:

  • homeless shelter
  • animal shelter
  • youth center
  • senior center
  • performing arts center
"Players apply for grants and loans, outfit not-for-profits with the basic necessities, and watch the news ticker to make sure a hurricane doesn’t interfere with plans. With successful management of funds, players are given additional grants and donations, enabling their organization to grow in scale and offer more services to further help the community. The goal of the game is to serve as many people (or animals) as possible, which will maximize karma, so players can move on the next city and make a difference there, too."

The game is brought to you by the Chase Morgan Foundation, which is a charitable foundation created by the JPMorgan Chase Foundation. 9MMEDIA created game. Dosomething.org has done an effective job reaching out to corporations (pepsi, staples, Doritos) to get funding for very progressive action by kids in their communities. The corporate funding does raise interesting issues about the role of corporations in the education system: Is corporate funding just public relations/advertising? Should the public space of schools contain brand images? Can students understand the goals / effects of corporate participation in the education system?

Specific lesson plans provided for "old people" focus on the role of non-profits, city and nonprofit research, and budgeting.

Final Fun, Green and Fair verdict: Loads of fun and the game brings out the "better nature of ourselves": helping others and DO-ing Something!
