Seriously, how cute are cows? Unfortunately, the livestock industry is responsible for 18% of green house gas emissions according to a 2006 FAO report, beef requires massive amounts of water to keep the cows hydrated and the demand for pasture has led to deforestation.
Livestock plays an important roles in our diets and economies. Hamburgers and hotdogs, steaks and prosciutto carry cultural meanings. Pound for pound, beef production generates greenhouse gases that
contribute more than 13 times as much to global warming as do the gases
emitted from producing chicken. For potatoes, the multiplier is 57 (Scientific American ). This summary outlines some of the environmental costs of eating animals?
Meat is a big deal: Global production of meat is projected to more than double from 229 million tonnes in 1999/2001 to 465 million tonnes in 2050, and that of milk to increase from 580 to 1 043 million tonnes (FAO, 2006a). The bulk of the growth in meat and in milk production will occur in developing countries. Among the meat products, poultry will be the commodity of choice for reasons of acceptance across cultures and technical efficiency in relation to feed concentrates.

Karma Tycoon is all about helping and earning karma rather than money or points for killing. It is brought to you by the folks that encourage us to DO SOMETHING. The mellow music and addictive gameplay lure you into a difficult world of helping the homeless and most vulnerable...another excellent example of a fun, green and fair game.
Players get a feeling for work in the non-profit sector and actually making a difference in 11 different cities across the United
States, running a:
- homeless shelter
- animal shelter
- youth center
- senior center
- performing arts center
"Players apply for grants and loans, outfit not-for-profits with the
basic necessities, and watch the news ticker to make sure a hurricane
doesn’t interfere with plans. With successful management of funds,
players are given additional grants and donations, enabling their
organization to grow in scale and offer more services to further help
the community. The goal of the game is to serve as many people (or
animals) as possible, which will maximize karma, so players can move on
the next city and make a difference there, too."

Taking a step beyond gardening and urban fruit collection, these intrepid foragers eat wild urban goodness (all veggie). There is much to enjoy in Chicago, except for the heavily dog pee covered patches:
Urban foragers are people who eat
what grows naturally from a very unnatural place— a city. In this
all-vegetarian Sky Full of Bacon podcast, urban foragers show us how
they find food all around them, and we nibble our way through a
remarkable wilderness literally in the shadow of Chicago’s skyscrapers.
...Feeling a little cabin feverish this
winter? This Sky Full of Bacon podcast (shot in September and October)
will take you back to a sunnier, somewhat greener time as we
explore the city looking for growing things to eat— from fruits to
herbs to medicines.
